A Long Struggle with Snoring
Since my 30s, snoring has been a constant problem in my life. It wasn’t just annoying for me—it caused tension with others. My sister and I, who are very close, would argue every time we shared a room. She couldn’t sleep because of my snoring, and we eventually agreed never to room together again. My long suffering husband, would nudge me during the night to change positions and try to stop the noise.
Despite all this, I thought snoring was just a minor issue. I didn’t think it was something I needed to fix. I assumed it was just a part of who I was.
Sleep Problems in My 40s
When I reached my mid-40s, my sleep got much worse. I was waking up 3–4 times every night, mostly because I felt the need to go to the bathroom. These interruptions left me feeling exhausted, frustrated, and constantly tired.
At first, I thought this was normal. I assumed it was just part of getting older or something that happened during perimenopause. Many of my patients said they experienced the same thing, so I figured it was just something I had to deal with.
But over time, I noticed other problems. My memory wasn’t as sharp as it used to be. I started forgetting simple things, like where I left my keys or the name of someone I had just met. Tasks that used to feel easy now felt overwhelming.
A Wake-Up Call
Everything changed after I watched the movie Still Alice. It’s about a woman with early-onset dementia, and it hit me hard. The story felt too close to home. Watching the character’s memory and mental abilities decline made me realize how scared I was about my own struggles. Was this happening to me? Was my memory loss the start of something serious?
That fear pushed me to do something about it. I didn’t know where to start, but I knew I couldn’t just ignore the problem anymore.
Learning About the Importance of Sleep
A turning point came when I joined a fitness class for peri-menopausal women. During one session, we talked about the importance of sleep and how it affects every part of your health. This was a lightbulb moment for me.
I thought I was already living a healthy lifestyle. I meditated daily and woke up at 4:30 am to have quiet time in the mornings. But I was also sabotaging myself with late-night Netflix binges. I wasn’t prioritizing sleep, and it was catching up with me.
A Life-Changing Gift
For my birthday, my husband gave me an Apple Watch with a sleep-tracking feature. At first, I thought it was just a fancy gadget. But when I started using it, I was shocked by what I found.
The watch showed that I was barely getting any REM sleep, the type of deep sleep that’s essential for memory and mental health. No wonder I felt so foggy and forgetful all the time!
The main culprit was my bladder. I was waking up several times a night to go to the bathroom, a problem my family had teased me about for years. My younger son even wrote about it in a school story—it was funny, but also embarrassing.
I decided to talk to my doctor, who suggested medication to calm my bladder. Within days, my nightly wake-ups dropped to just one. After a few weeks, I retrained my bladder and no longer needed the medication. I finally started sleeping through the night.
Fixing My Snoring
Once my sleep improved, I turned my attention to my snoring. For 25 years, it had been a constant issue. I decided to make a big lifestyle change and switched to a whole food, low-carb eating plan.
The results were incredible. I lost weight, and my snoring disappeared completely. My husband, who had endured years of sleepless nights, was thrilled.
The Benefits of Better Sleep
Now, two and a half years later, I feel like a new person. Getting better sleep has transformed my life.
My memory is sharper, and my mind feels clear. Tasks that used to feel overwhelming are now manageable. I wake up feeling refreshed and ready to take on the day.
Even my relationships have improved. Without the irritation caused by poor sleep and snoring, I’m a better wife, mother, and friend.
