Chronic Stress in Women Over 40: A Wake-Up Call

If you’re anything like me, you’ve spent much of your life being the strong one. The reliable one. The one who gets things done—whether you’re juggling career, family, community, or all three. You take pride in showing up. You tick off the to-do list. You make sure things run smoothly.

But what if that very strength is quietly costing you your health?

For years, I was the classic “rushing woman.” Always on the move. Always doing. Always driven. I wore my busyness like a badge of honour, convinced that being productive meant being strong. I genuinely believed I could do it all—and for a while, I did.

But eventually, my body sent a message I couldn’t ignore.

My Wake-Up Call

A few years ago, I returned home from a low-carb medical conference in the U.S. Jet lagged and sleep-deprived, I jumped straight into online mentoring sessions at 3 or 4 a.m. (thanks to the time difference), then presented at a major conference in Brisbane over the weekend, followed by teaching a full-day GP course in Melbourne the next week. The very next day, I launched a six-week fasting program through Whole Food Revolution.

I had been running on adrenaline for days. And in the middle of that launch, my voice gave out—completely. I couldn’t speak. I had to take three full days off work to recover. It was my body’s way of screaming: “Enough.”

You’d think I would have learned. But like many of us, I slowly drifted back into familiar patterns.

Last year, during a routine check-up, the nurse looked at me with concern:
“Your blood pressure is 180 over 100.”
I was shocked. I felt fine—or so I thought. I eat well, I move regularly, I meditate. But I’d been in that old rhythm again: busy, overstretched, pushing through fatigue and stress. Sound familiar?

That same week, I went on my annual nine-day silent meditation retreat. Surrounded by stillness and calm, I became acutely aware of how fast I’d been moving—internally and externally. While others walked slowly and mindfully, I caught myself marching with intensity, like I was late for an appointment. I had to consciously remind myself to slow down, to soften my breath, to release the tension from my jaw and shoulders.

That retreat reminded me of a powerful truth:

Just because we can do it all, doesn’t mean we should.

Especially now, in our 40s, 50s, and beyond, our bodies are asking for something different. Not more hustle—but more harmony. Not more pushing—but more pausing. Not more control—but deeper connection.

Introducing: RESET AND RISE – 5 Minutes for You

This is my personal invitation to women like us—women who have spent years in overdrive, multitasking, and caring for everyone but themselves.

This month, I invite you to take just five minutes each day.
Not to achieve. Not to perform. But simply to be.
Breathe. Stretch. Reflect. Pause.
Let those five minutes be your anchor—a sacred moment of reset.

Because when we take time to reset, we rise.

Why It Matters: The Hidden Cost of Chronic Stress in Women Over 40

Stress isn’t just about feeling overwhelmed. It has very real biological consequences—especially in midlife when hormonal shifts make our bodies more sensitive to stress signals.

When stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline are repeatedly activated, they start to cause subtle damage across multiple systems:

  • Chronic inflammation becomes the norm, which is now known to be the root cause of nearly all chronic diseases—from heart disease and diabetes to Alzheimer’s and depression.

  • Immune function weakens over time. Our body’s security team—especially our natural killer (NK) cells—start to falter. These cells are responsible for identifying and destroying threats like viruses and circulating cancer cells. When stress is unrelenting, their activity drops, reducing our cancer protection.

  • Autoimmune conditions can be triggered, where the immune system turns against healthy tissue.

  • Gut health suffers. Chronic stress disrupts the balance of your microbiome—leading to more inflammatory bacteria and fewer protective species. This imbalance contributes to IBS, SIBO, IBD, leaky gut, and food sensitivities.

  • Insulin resistance becomes more likely, leading to belly fat, fatigue after meals, and difficulty losing weight despite eating well.

  • Poor sleep, anxiety, irritability, and brain fog creep in, often dismissed as “just aging”—but they’re not. They’re messages from a body stuck in overdrive.

The “Surprise Diagnosis” in Healthy Women

One of the most eye-opening parts of my work is seeing how often stress is the silent root behind what I call “surprise disease.”
That unexpected high blood pressure.
That unexplained fatigue.
That breast lump.
That prediabetes diagnosis in someone who’s been eating well, exercising, and seemingly doing everything right.

If that’s happened to you—or someone you know—it’s not a fluke. It’s a signal.
Chronic low-grade stress wears down your body from the inside out. It doesn’t always shout. Sometimes, it whispers for years—until one day, it doesn’t.

It’s Time to Do Less—On Purpose

We live in a culture that praises busyness and productivity, but rarely honors stillness, softness, or restoration. As women, we often feel guilty for resting. But your nervous system needs rest. Your mitochondria (your energy factories) need calm. Your immune cells need rhythm and sleep.

Taking five minutes a day may sound simple—but it’s a radical act of self-respect.

So this month, during my travels, I’ll be sharing gentle daily prompts—not to add noise to your feed, but to remind you to return to yourself. A soft nudge. A deep breath. A shared moment of pause.

Let’s Reset. Then Let’s Rise.

This is not about doing more.
This is about reconnecting with the rhythm of your body, your breath, and your inner wisdom.

You don’t need to meditate for an hour, book a yoga retreat, or journal in the perfect notebook. Just five minutes.
That’s all it takes to begin shifting from survival mode to restoration mode.

Because when we pause, we heal.
When we reset, we rise.
And when women over 40 reclaim their calm—we transform not just our own lives, but everyone we touch.
