Find Your Voice: How I Overcame fear of speaking & Took Back My Health

Find your voice

For most of my life, I struggled to find my voice. Not just metaphorically, but literally. From the age of five, I battled a vocal cord condition that made speaking a challenge. I had to push every word out, and by the time I finished a sentence, I was out of breath. I grew up frustrated, shouting to be heard, and eventually, I just gave up on speaking altogether. I simply couldn’t find my voice.
Would you like to find your voice?

The truth is, finding your voice isn’t just about being heard. It’s about taking control of your body, your mind, and your life. It’s about stepping out of silence—whether that silence is caused by fear, self-doubt, or a physical condition like mine. And what I learned through my journey is that your health is directly connected to your ability to express yourself.

For years, I avoided speaking. But as I started working on my health—through food, mindset shifts, and emotional healing—I realized something powerful: The more I took care of my body, the stronger my voice became. Today, I help others heal without relying solely on medication, and I want to share why finding and reclaiming your voice is one of the most important steps to reclaiming your health.

The Silent Struggle: Growing Up Without a Voice

My journey started when I was just five years old. I knew something was wrong. No matter how hard I tried, my voice never sounded like others’. I had to force my words out, and even then, I struggled to be heard.

As a child, frustration became my default response. Since I couldn’t express myself easily, I shouted. I got angry. I was filled with resentment because I felt trapped inside my own body.

By the time I reached school age, my struggles grew even worse. Speaking in class was a nightmare. Imagine sitting at your desk, knowing that at any moment, the teacher could call on you to read out loud. Just the thought of it freaked me out. I remember choosing being perceived stupid and lazy over humiliation—I would rather pretend I didn’t do my homework than struggle through a single sentence in front of my classmates.

It wasn’t just embarrassment—it was exhausting. Every word felt like a battle.

The Surgery That Changed My Life—But Didn’t Change My Mindset

I was in speech therapy for years. They said I don’t speak properly. I don’t breathe properly but nothing helped. At one stage, they said I needed surgery, but my mum refused so I had to live with it. My siblings would sing together and made fun of me when I tried joining in.
At 18 years old, when I could make my own choices, I had surgery on my vocal cords. It was supposed to be the turning point—the moment I could finally speak without struggle.

And physically, it worked. I could talk more easily. I was no longer hyperventilating to speak but emotionally? I was still stuck in fear of speaking.

For years, I had trained myself not to speak or to demand other listening to me and I did it with lots of anger. Even though my voice was technically better, I didn’t trust it. I never spoke in public. I never raised my voice in a crowd and most importantly, I never shared my thoughts beyond a small circle of people.

Because when you’ve spent your whole life believing that your voice doesn’t matter, a physical fix isn’t enough. You have to learn to trust yourself again.
For years, my solution was to express myself, in writing. No one could hear my voice when I wrote. It was an easy solution. I mostly wrote for myself.

The Moment I Finally Found My Voice

Every February, I celebrate something deeply personal—the moment I truly found my voice.

That moment came 27 years ago, when my 12-year-old son said something that changed everything:

“Mom, you sing beautifully.”

I was stunned. Me? Sing beautifully? I had spent my entire life believing my voice was weak, unworthy, and something to be hidden. Yet here was my own child, hearing something beautiful in what I had always seen as broken.

That single sentence rewired something in me. It made me question the story I had been telling myself my whole life: Was my voice actually a problem? Or was it my belief about my voice that had been holding me back?

And that’s when I started to truly own my voice.

Why Finding Your Voice is About More Than Just Speaking

Finding your voice is about more than just talking. It’s about:

  • Trusting yourself – Believing that what you have to say matters.
  • Expressing your needs – Instead of stuffing down emotions with food , shouting or silence.
  • Taking control of your health – Because your body listens to what your mind believes.

And here’s what I learned: Your health and your voice are deeply connected.

When we hold back our voice, we also hold back our emotions. And when we suppress emotions, we turn to unhealthy coping mechanisms—like emotional eating, stress, and self-doubt.

I see this all the time in my work. So many people struggle with emotional eating because they’re using food to fill the space where their voice should be.

Why I Am Not Against Doctors—But I Am Against Giving Up Control

People sometimes assume that because I help others heal naturally, I must be against doctors.

Let me be clear: I am not against doctors.

Doctors saved my voice. That surgery changed my life.

But here’s what I am against: Handing over all of our power to the medical system without taking responsibility for our own health.

Medical interventions should be a tool, not a crutch. My surgery helped me, but it didn’t teach me how to care for my body, how to fuel myself with the right foods, or how to manage my emotions. That part was up to me.

And that’s the part I want to help my client’ with.

The Connection Between Health, Food & Finding Your Voice

Your body listens to you. The thoughts you think, the beliefs you hold, and the food you eat all shape your health.

When I finally found my voice, I also started finding my power over my health. Over the years, I learned the connection between our emotional state and our physical state. It wasn’t just a physical problem, it was emotional.
When I think about how this “disability” shaped me, how it contributed to what I do now, I know that “thanks” to it, I was fully prepared to help my clients find their own voices.

If you’ve been struggling with your health, stress, or emotional eating, ask yourself:

Where am I not expressing myself?

What tools do I use to express myself? Are they functional or dysfunctional?

What emotions am I silencing?

What stories am I telling myself about my body, my health, or my voice?

Because healing starts with awareness.
