Let me share Kishani’s story—a journey of rediscovery, transformation, and hope. It’s a story that might sound familiar to many of us who feel stuck, overwhelmed, or lost when it comes to health and wellness. But Kishani didn’t just feel stuck—she felt like she was staring at someone she didn’t recognize when she looked in the mirror.
She described it vividly: “I felt like a sumo wrestler standing in front of a mirror.” That raw honesty captures how low she felt. Her weight had been steadily increasing, and she couldn’t pinpoint why. It wasn’t as if she was eating fast food every day or consuming endless soft drinks. Yet, her weight climbed, and the frustration grew. She felt like her body was spiralling out of control, and she didn’t know how to stop it.
Kishani wasn’t new to trying to lose weight. She had bought countless recipe books, followed strict diet plans for a week or two, but always fell back into old habits. Each time she tried and “failed,” her confidence took another hit. “I thought maybe this is just how it’s meant to be as I get older,” she admitted. But deep down, she knew she didn’t want to settle for that.
The wake-up call came when a blood test revealed that she was pre-diabetic. The results hit her hard. At the same time, she was also experiencing the symptoms of peri-menopause. It felt like everything was piling up—her health, her hormones, her energy. She knew she had to make a change, but where to begin?
That’s when inspiration came from an unexpected place. Kishani had a close friend who had undergone a remarkable transformation. Her friend shared how whole foods and intermittent fasting had turned her life around. Seeing those changes in someone she trusted gave Kishani the nudge she needed to take the leap. She thought back to her younger self—the slim, vibrant 20-year-old who weighed just 34 kilos when she moved to Australia. “That was 30 years ago,” she reflected. But she knew she could find a healthier version of herself again.
So, she decided to join the Whole Food Revolution 16-Week Holistic Health Program. It wasn’t just another diet—it was a holistic approach that addressed the root causes of her struggles. She was nervous, of course. After all, she’d tried so many things before without lasting success. But this time, something felt different.
What Kishani Learned
Throughout the program, Kishani learned countless valuable lessons, but three key takeaways truly changed her perspective:
-
Protein is the Foundation.
“I had no idea how much protein I actually needed,” she said. It wasn’t about just eating more—it was about eating the right amount. For years, she had heard about higher-protein diets, but no one ever explained how to calculate the protein requirements specific to her body and lifestyle. Learning this was a game-changer.At first, it was a challenge to hit her protein goals, especially since she wasn’t a big red meat eater. But she found creative ways to include protein through eggs, fish, lentils, and other whole foods. She quickly noticed how it kept her fuller for longer, curbed her cravings, and gave her more energy. “It’s amazing how something so simple can make such a big difference.”
-
Small Changes Have Big Impacts.
One of the simplest, yet most effective lessons she learned was the power of getting outside for sunlight. “I never realized how important something as basic as sunlight could be,” Kishani shared. Just a few minutes a day in the sun improved her mood and boosted her energy. These small, actionable steps helped her stay consistent without feeling overwhelmed. -
Understanding Carbs Changed Everything.
Growing up in a Sri Lankan household, rice had always been a staple. For years, she believed that cutting carbs entirely was the only way to lose weight. But the program taught her a more balanced approach and the infographic showing how much sugar is in just a handful of cooked rice was a game changer! She also learned how to pair carbs with protein and fibre to keep her blood sugar stable and her body satisfied. Now, she still enjoys rice occasionally, but it’s a mindful choice rather than a default habit.
The Changes She Made
Since completing the program, Kishani’s life has transformed in ways she never imagined. She now eats a diet rich in whole foods and focuses on getting enough protein at every meal.
She also rediscovered her love for gardening, which has become a source of joy and physical activity. “It’s not just gardening—it’s my therapy,” she says with a smile.
She’s also started practicing mindfulness and exploring meditation. While she admits she’s not perfect, she’s learning to carve out time for herself amidst her busy schedule of work, family, and household responsibilities. “It’s not about doing everything at once,” she says. “It’s about prioritizing what matters.”
One of the most noticeable changes has been the disappearance of her chronic heartburn. “I used to get heartburn almost every day. Now, it’s completely gone,” she says proudly. She’s also no longer battling the 4 p.m. energy crash that used to leave her drained and irritable. “I feel like I have energy that lasts throughout the day, and I never thought I’d say that.”
Adapting to Her Culture
Being Sri Lankan, Kishani initially worried that the program wouldn’t fit into her cultural lifestyle. But to her surprise, it wasn’t as difficult as she imagined. She still prepares traditional Sri Lankan meals for her family but makes small adjustments to suit her own needs. For example, she prioritizes vegetables and protein over rice and has learned to enjoy curries without feeling guilty.
The only challenge she still faces is navigating social gatherings. “When I visit family or friends, I don’t always feel comfortable bringing my own food or saying no to rice. But I’m learning to balance those situations without feeling pressured.”
A Ripple Effect
What’s truly inspiring about Kishani’s journey is the ripple effect it’s had on her family. Her kids have started noticing the changes in her energy and health and are asking more questions about the foods they eat. She’s proud to set an example for them and hopes they’ll carry these lessons into their own lives.
Kishani’s Message
Looking back, Kishani feels this program was the best investment she ever made. “I’ve tried so many things before—diets, exercise plans, you name it—but nothing worked like this,” she says. Even though she hasn’t implemented every single strategy perfectly, the changes she has made are meaningful and sustainable and have transformed her life.
Her advice to anyone considering a lifestyle change? “Do it. It’s not just about the food—it’s about committing to yourself and your health. Even small changes can make a big difference. You don’t have to be perfect; you just have to start.”
For Kishani, this journey wasn’t just about losing weight or fixing her health—it was about reclaiming her life. And while she knows there’s still work to be done, she’s confident she’s on the right path. “I feel like myself again,” she says. “And that’s the best gift I could have given myself.”
