Why Is It So Hard to Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle?

In today’s fast-paced world, maintaining a healthy lifestyle can feel like an uphill battle. From tempting fast foods to conflicting diet advice, the obstacles seem endless. But here’s the truth: it’s not your fault. The environment we live in, shaped by the food industry and outdated health messaging, plays a significant role in making healthy choices difficult.

Discovering the Food Environment

Imagine walking into a supermarket filled with aisles of colorful, processed foods designed to be irresistibly tasty. These foods, often labeled as hyper-palatable, are engineered to hit our “bliss point” – triggering pleasure centers in our brains and making them hard to resist. This manipulation isn’t new; it’s a result of our evolutionary drive to seek out calorie-dense foods for survival, now exploited by modern food technology.

The food industry invests heavily in research to create products that not only taste good but also keep us coming back for more. They capitalize on our innate biological responses, leveraging flavors, textures, and even packaging to encourage overconsumption. These tactics are effective in an environment where convenience often trumps nutritional value, making it challenging for individuals to make healthy choices.

Navigating Through Confusion

Adding to the challenge is the barrage of conflicting dietary advice bombarding us daily. One day, a new diet trend promises miraculous results, only to be debunked the next. This misinformation creates confusion about what truly constitutes a healthy diet. In such a landscape, making informed choices becomes daunting, if not impossible.

Navigating this sea of information requires a discerning eye and a solid understanding of nutritional science. Unfortunately, many individuals lack access to reliable sources or the ability to interpret complex research findings. As a result, they may fall prey to fad diets or unbalanced eating habits that promise quick fixes but fail to deliver sustainable health benefits.

Doctors do not get training in nutrition

Compounding these issues is the lack of nutrition education in medical training. Many doctors receive minimal instruction on nutrition and lifestyle, leaving them ill-equipped to provide comprehensive guidance to patients. This gap means that crucial advice on diet and health often falls through the cracks of our healthcare system.

I graduated from medical school in Scotland nearly 30 years ago, and I cannot recall receiving any education on nutrition. At that time, the science of nutrition was in its infancy, which may have justified its omission. However, it is unacceptable that current medical students still receive insufficient education on nutrition (Nutrition in medical education: a systematic review, Lancet 2019).

Medical professionals are trained to treat symptoms and diseases rather than prevent them through lifestyle interventions. This reactive approach overlooks the significant impact that diet and lifestyle choices can have on overall health outcomes. As a result, patients may receive incomplete or conflicting advice, hindering their ability to make informed decisions about their well-being.

Embracing My Culinary Heritage

Having grown up in Sri Lanka, I developed a deep love for our carb-rich traditional dishes like rice, roti, string hopper, and kottu. These foods not only nourished my body but also connected me to my cultural heritage and family traditions. However, as I became more aware of health issues related to excessive carb intake, such as weight gain and insulin resistance, I realized the importance of moderation and balance in my diet.

Whenever I felt my waistbands tightening, I would temporarily cut down on carbs for a week or two, which usually helped me feel more comfortable. However, I struggled to sustain this habit over the long term, despite knowing it worked. Reflecting on this, I realized it was because I lacked understanding of why reducing carbs was important, how our bodies derive energy from food, and I didn’t have knowledge of alternative eating habits.

Empowering Change Through Knowledge

Gaining this knowledge has been transformative for me in making sustainable lifestyle changes. Empowerment begins with understanding the science behind nutrition and health, equipping us to make informed decisions. When armed with accurate information, I could navigate the food environment more effectively, choosing foods that truly nourish my body and mind.

Knowledge is power, and it empowers us to question prevailing dietary norms, evaluate food choices critically, and adopt healthier eating habits. By learning about macronutrients, micronutrients, and their role in maintaining bodily functions, I gained a newfound appreciation for the impact of food on my overall well-being.

Turning Knowledge into Action

Yet, knowledge alone isn’t enough. Many of us know what we should do to stay healthy but struggle to put it into practice. This gap between knowing and doing highlights the importance of building good habits. Daily routines like meal planning, regular exercise, and seeking support from a like-minded community can transform intentions into actions. For me, being part of a low-carb community such as the Whole Food Revolution keeps me motivated, inspired, and accountable.

The Importance of Guidance and Support

For many people, guidance and support are essential for sustainable lifestyle changes. Forming new habits takes time – typically 3 to 6 months to become ingrained. During this period, having the right support system can make a world of difference in staying on track and overcoming challenges along the way. Whether it’s through online communities, wellness coaches, or supportive friends and family, finding the right support network is crucial.

Support systems provide encouragement, accountability, and practical advice that facilitate long-term success. They offer a platform for sharing experiences, celebrating milestones, and navigating setbacks, fostering a sense of belonging and motivation. Personally, I found that discussing challenges and successes with like-minded individuals not only reinforced my commitment to healthy living but also offered valuable insights and encouragement during difficult times.

Addressing Mindset and Cravings

Our mindset plays a crucial role in sustaining healthy habits. By challenging unhealthy beliefs and understanding our triggers, such as sugar cravings, we can develop strategies to overcome these obstacles. Cultivating a positive mindset shifts our focus from short-term fixes to long-term health goals.

For me, it was about realizing that despite my cultural background, I could adopt a low-carb lifestyle. Changing my beliefs about what is possible was crucial. Accepting that I couldn’t always maintain a strict low-carb diet and being flexible in my thinking were essential. Being kind and forgiving to myself when I didn’t make the right choice has also been very helpful.

Mindset encompasses our attitudes, beliefs, and perceptions about food, exercise, and overall well-being. It influences our motivation, resilience, and ability to sustain healthy behaviors over time. Developing a growth mindset, characterized by a willingness to learn from setbacks and embrace change, empowers us to navigate challenges and stay committed to our health goals.

Embracing a Holistic Approach

Ultimately, achieving a healthy lifestyle requires a holistic approach. It’s not just about what we eat or how much we exercise; it encompasses our entire way of life. This holistic approach includes nurturing a supportive community, prioritizing mental well-being, and integrating sustainable practices that foster long-term health.

Holistic health emphasizes the interconnectedness of mind, body, and spirit, recognizing that each aspect plays a vital role in overall well-being. It encourages us to consider the impact of our daily choices on physical health, emotional resilience, and spiritual fulfillment. By adopting a holistic perspective, I learned to prioritize self-care, stress management, and personal growth alongside dietary changes, creating a comprehensive approach to health and wellness.
