The Mother’s Day Wake-Up Call: It’s Time to Put Your Health First

Dear Exhausted Mum, It’s Time to Choose You!

This Mother’s Day, skip the candles, fluffy slippers, and breakfast in bed. The real gift you need is something deeper. It’s the decision to finally take care of you.

If you’re like so many mothers out there—overweight, run-down, emotionally drained, and juggling a never-ending to-do list—you didn’t get here overnight. You got here by putting everyone else first for far too long. You sacrificed meals, sleep, fun, rest, even your own health… all in the name of love.

If you feel run down your body is calling for help. Your emotions are overflowing. And somewhere deep inside, you know this can’t go on.

Gabbor Mate, a very famous psychologist found a close correlation between women’s sacrifice and being sick in autoimmune diseases and cancer. Your mother’s day gift, should be to stay away from these statistics.

How Did We Get Here?

Motherhood is often sold as a beautiful journey—and it is. But what’s not talked about enough is how much mothers give until there’s nothing left for themselves.

You skipped meals while feeding your family. You stayed up late helping with homework but ignored your own stress. You smiled through the fatigue, convincing yourself this is what strong women do.

Sound familiar?

For many of us, the result is extra weight we can’t shift, health issues that creep in slowly, and emotional burnout that feels impossible to shake.

We Don’t Need More Perfume. We Need Permission.

This Mother’s Day, give yourself something radical: permission to matter.

It starts with a small but powerful shift: Realizing that caring for your own body, mind, and health is not selfish—it’s essential. You can’t pour from an empty cup. You can’t give from a place of depletion. You deserve to breathe too.

Just like on an airplane—put your oxygen mask on first. Not because you’re more important, but because you’re just as important.

Your Body Is Asking for Change

Let’s be honest: years of putting yourself last leaves marks. Extra weight. Fatigue. Illness. Emotional fragility. These are signs, not flaws.

Your body is not the enemy—it’s the messenger. And it’s been whispering for a while now:

  • “I’m tired.”
  • “I need real food.”
  • “I miss feeling alive.”
  • “Please slow down.”

So now what?

Start Small, But Start Now

This isn’t about becoming a different person. It’s about reconnecting with the woman you’ve always been—the one buried under laundry, errands, and emotional labour.

Here’s how to begin:

💚 Schedule Yourself In: You put everyone else in the calendar. Now block time for you. Not “when there’s time”—make the time.

💚 Eat Like You Matter: Nourish your body with whole food, not scraps or leftovers. You deserve the good stuff too.

💚 Move Gently: You don’t need bootcamp. You need connection. Go for a walk, stretch, dance in the kitchen.

💚 Say No More Often: Every “yes” to someone else that drains you is a “no” to your wellbeing. Learn to say no with love.

💚 Rest Without Guilt: Sleep is not a luxury. It’s medicine. Let yourself rest, deeply and without apology.

What Are You Teaching Your Kids?

When you ignore your needs, you’re not just hurting yourself—you’re sending a message. Your children are watching. They learn more from what you do than what you say.

If you show them that mothers must always suffer and sacrifice, they will internalize that message—about their future selves or their future partners.

Instead, show them that self-care is strength. That choosing your health is not weakness, but wisdom. That women are allowed to matter.

Celebrate Yourself—All Year Long

Mother’s Day is not a pass to care for yourself just one day a year. It’s a wake-up call to reclaim your worth and make yourself a daily priority.

This year don’t wait for someone to hand you flowers. Plant your own garden. Start a morning walk. Cook something beautiful for yourself. Say yes to life again.

No More Waiting for Spare Time

Spare time is an illusion. If you’re a mother, you’ve already learned that there’s no perfect moment to take care of yourself. So don’t wait. Start now. In the middle of the mess. While the laundry piles up and the emails stack.

Start anyway.

Choose yourself again and again—because you’re worth it.
