I’m a person that always says it is never too late to change. You see, I’m in the industry of change for many years. I must believe in it, otherwise I’m useless to my clients and I walk the talk.
When people are facing big challenges, I’m always there saying “ it is never too late to change”. My rule is that when someone tells me that I can’t do something or it is too late, I say “ Hell no!. As long as I have some breath in me, I will try or die trying”.
This strategy served me well in many areas of my life. I never give up.
I have adopted that belief in my special education studies. We had to work with so many children with difficulties and many times the system only expected us to make sure things stays the same and not worse and I never liked it. I had amazing teachers that taught me that there is always a way, I just haven’t found it yet. There is always a way.
I took this philosophy to the way I manage my health. When my doctors said “ Osteoporosis can’t be changed but only stopped” I said “Hell no!. I will change it!” and I did.
This year, I was away visiting my family, including my brother who was struggling with cancer for 2.5 years. He started with a prostate cancer that just for your knowledge is a very common cancer for man and only a small percentage will die from it. Most of them will die from complications due to the treatment. Trust me, after I have heard about his cancer, I researched it to a PH.D level and was very, very optimistic. My dad lived over 15 years after he had prostate cancer ( and was very healthy when he went to sleep and just didn’t wake up in the morning at the age of 89)so I had all the reasons to be optimistic.
But, my brother, did not invest any second in learning about it ( knowledge is king) and every medication he received, cause a new problem in his body.
The doctors suggested Chemo ; he went for a chemo ( without knowing what chemo is. He literally asked my younger sister a day before his Chemo what does it mean?)
The doctors said radiation, he said “ sure” but every treatment, cause a new life-threatening problem and straight after Chemo the cancer started spreading.
2-3 months after chemo, it was found in his hips.
2-3 months after another chemo, it was found in the bones of his chest
And so on and so on… When I was there visiting, it started in his skull and during the six weeks of my visit, it reached his spine.
After radiation, he lost the feeling in his feet.
The doctors kept doing radiation and every time after radiation he couldn’t feel more and more parts of his leg.
He was given pain killers that stopped his bowl movement and to help with that he was given medication that caused nausea, and he couldn’t eat anything because he threw up everything he puts in his mouth..
He was given so many pain killers that his ears got swollen and he couldn’t hear and to lower the swelling they injected steroids, which caused diabetes, and they gave him morphine and the morphine caused a drop in his Hemoglobin and the saga went on and on and on…
It was 2.5 years saga of a treatment that that finally succeeded in killing him.
Farewell realization
My visit was a farewell visit. Less than a month after we came back home, he died and with him died the belief that it is never too late to change. Never too late to find a solution. Never too late to heal.
In perspective, I think I refined my belief even more.
I still believe it wasn’t too late to save his life because I have helped many of my clients to save their life, even from life threatening situations but what was too late was to change his mind about his ability to save his life.
Do you know why?
Because he was in so much physical pain and when you are in such pain, you can’t change anything.
Change happens in a different part of the brain and when you are in pain, the primitive brain takes over. Changing your mindset, thinking differently about food, about life, about health is simply impossible.
So, it is never too late to change but there is a point it is too late to change your mind about your ability to change.
Whatever we do, we must never ever reach this point where we are in so much pain, physical or emotional that we don’t believe that we can change anything. That’s giving up!
In each of our vehicles, there is a battery, if you have any health problem or emotional problem, your battery runs low. Never let this battery run so low that you can’t charge it anymore.
Never reach the “too late” button.
