Passover is all about freedom—breaking away from the things that enslave us. But while we remember the physical exodus from Egypt, there’s another kind of slavery many of us still experience emotional bondage. Stress, fear, negative thinking, and emotional eating can trap us just as much as Pharaoh trapped the Israelites. And just like Egypt suffered 10 plagues before the people were freed, we, too, face mental and emotional plagues that hold us back from true wellbeing.
This Passover let’s break free—not just physically, but emotionally and mentally—by overcoming the 10 Plagues of the Mind with practical mindset shifts and exercises.
When I was young, Passover was a very special event in my family. Apart from the fact we had a long school holiday, it was a freedom holiday. To prepare for it, for three weeks and sometimes more, we were busy cleaning the house. It was the spring cleaning “festival”. It was called “ spring cleaning” because on the other side of the world, where Jewish people lived, Passover was the beginning of spring.
Passover was such a “cleaning” event that culturally, even when we went through an emotional challenge and needed to clean ourselves from emotional bondage, we say we need to do some “Passover cleaning”. Some don’t even use the word cleaning , they just say we need to do some “ Passover”, and everyone knows it means “ emotional cleaning”
This Passover that is approaching made me think about the symbolism of the holiday. We may not have a Pharaoh ruling over us, but often, we become our own Pharaoh—enslaving ourselves with limiting beliefs, fears, and negative thought patterns. We imprison ourselves with the chains of perfectionism, self-doubt, and emotional eating, convincing ourselves that change is impossible. We tell ourselves stories about who we are—“I can’t lose weight,” “I’ll always be anxious,” “I don’t deserve happiness”—and these stories become our shackles. The truth is freedom begins in the mind. Just as the Israelites had to believe in their ability to break free before they could leave Egypt, we, too, must first recognize the prisons we’ve built for ourselves. Only then can we take the steps to shatter them and step into emotional and physical liberation
If we talk symbolism, let’s talk about the plagues we cast upon ourselves every day. .
The 10 Plagues of Emotional Health (And How to Overcome Them)
-
Blood – The Poison of Negative Thinking
Blood in the Nile made everything toxic, just like negative thoughts poison our minds and emotions. Constant self-criticism, doubt, and pessimism can drain our energy and keep us stuck.
Freedom Exercise: Each day, write down three positive things about yourself. Shift your inner dialogue from “I can’t” to “I’m learning” and from “I’m failing” to “I’m growing.”
-
Frogs – Overwhelm and Anxiety
The plague of frogs was chaotic—just like an anxious, overthinking mind. When we feel overwhelmed, our thoughts jump from one worry to another like frogs. This too can drain our energy. If you took any of WFR course, you know that health of body and mind is an optimal energy distribution.
Freedom Exercise: Practice the “5-4-3-2-1” grounding technique—name 5 things you see, 4 things you feel, 3 things you hear, 2 things you smell, and 1 thing you taste every time you feel anxious. This brings you back to the present moment.
-
Lice – The Small Things That Irritate Us
Lice are tiny but incredibly annoying, just like small daily frustrations—traffic, spilled coffee, a rude comment—that build up and stress us out. We are annoyed and frustrated when we are so focused on what Is not working and lose the proportion. This in time sends our body into the primitive brain when our body can’t do anything but… survive.
Freedom Exercise: Try the “3 Deep Breaths” rule. Before reacting to an irritation, take three slow, deep breaths. When we are stressed we have shallow breathing signaling to the body and mind we are under attack. When we breath slowly and deep, it sends a message of “ safety”. Try it! This small habit can transform your patience and resilience.
-
Flies – Distractions and Lack of Focus
Flies represent mental clutter—social media, endless to-do lists, and distractions that keep us from what really matters.
Freedom Exercise: Set a timer for 25 minutes and focus on one task (Pomodoro Technique). After that, take a 5-minute break. This trains your brain to concentrate better.
-
Livestock Disease – Neglecting the Body
When livestock died, food and health suffered. In our lives, neglecting physical health—poor diet, lack of movement—leads to emotional imbalance.
Freedom Exercise: Move your body daily, even if it’s just a 10-minute walk, dance, garden, jump rope… Physical movement releases stress and clears the mind.
-
Boils – Bottled-Up Emotions
Boils are painful and visible, much like emotional pain that festers when unaddressed. Suppressing emotions leads to stress and even physical illness.
Freedom Exercise: Journal for 5 minutes every night. Write down any emotions you experienced and let them out on paper instead of keeping them inside. Journaling was proven to be an excellent recovery tool; it is simple and cheap.
-
Hail – Emotional Outbursts
Hailstorms are sudden and destructive, much like emotional explosions—anger, frustration, or tears when emotions become too much to handle.
Freedom Exercise: Use the “Pause & Respond” method. When you feel an emotional storm brewing, pause, count to 10, and ask yourself, “How do I want to respond?”. Most people in prison would not be there if they only learned to pause.
-
Locusts – The Scarcity Mindset
Locusts devoured everything, leaving no resources behind. A scarcity mindset makes us believe there’s “not enough”—not enough time, money, love, or opportunities. When we focus on “lack” we have more of it as in life we get what we focus on. ( Not to mention the physical implications of stress about this “ lack” ) .
Freedom Exercise: Each morning, say three things you are grateful for. Gratitude shifts your mindset from scarcity to abundance.
I have to say that some people think of this exercise as self-cheating because it means we ignore our pain and sorrow. Trust me! Our amygdala will not forget it but it sure won’t grow bigger just by focusing on it.
-
Darkness – Feeling Stuck or Depressed
The plague of darkness represents hopelessness, isolation, and feeling lost. Sometimes, life feels like we’re walking in the dark without direction. Think of this darkness as temporary and adopt a belief that you are not there, yet!
Freedom Exercise: Take action, even if it’s small. When feeling stuck, do one thing to move forward—call a friend, go outside, or set a tiny goal to regain momentum. Every long journey starts with one step.
-
Death of the Firstborn – Letting Go of Old Identities
This final plague ended an era and forced change. Sometimes, we hold onto old identities—”It is my genetic” “I’m not strong enough” “I’m just an emotional eater,” “I’ll always be overweight,” “I can’t change.” And we need to let them go before we become a person who is in control of his/her health and self being, someone who is strong enough, who eats responsibly and change.
Freedom Exercise: Write down a limiting belief and challenge it. Ask yourself, “Is this absolutely true?” Replace it with a new, empowering belief.
Your Personal Exodus to Emotional Freedom
Passover teaches us that freedom isn’t just about leaving Egypt—it’s about breaking free from anything that holds us back, including our own thoughts and emotions.
By overcoming these 10 emotional plagues, we can step into a healthier, freer, and more joyful life. But true freedom requires the courage to grieve what we leave behind—the comfort of old habits, the certainty of familiar struggles, and the safety of who we once were. Change brings discomfort, but it also brings transformation.
This holiday, take the opportunity to reflect: What’s keeping you stuck? What can you release? Just as the Israelites took their first steps toward freedom, you, too, can start your own journey—one small step at a time.
Happy holidays ! Here’s to a Passover of emotional and physical liberation!
Amen!
