Prioritising Self-Care: Avoid Burnout and Thrive

prioritizing self-care

Prioritising self-care is one of the most important things you can do for your overall well-being, yet it’s something many of us struggle with. In our busy lives, we often put our needs last, focusing instead on family, work, community and countless other responsibilities. But the truth is, neglecting self-care comes at a cost—it can lead to burnout, exhaustion, and even long-term health problems. In this blog, I want to share my own journey of learning to prioritise self-care, the challenges I faced, and the small, practical steps that made a big difference. If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed and unsure how to put yourself first, this is for you.

Let’s be honest: we often put ourselves last on the list. Whether it’s kids, partner, parents, work, community or countless other responsibilities, our own needs seem to fall to the bottom of the pile. It’s almost as if we believe that taking care of ourselves is a luxury, something we’ll get to “when we have time.” But the truth is, that time often never comes. While it’s noble to care for others, constantly ignoring our own well-being can lead to significant consequences—exhaustion, burnout, and even long-term health issues.

The Reality of Neglecting Yourself

I’ve been there. As a mother, a wife, and a doctor, I know what it’s like to feel like you’re being pulled in a million directions. Early in my career, when I was a junior doctor, I worked long, gruelling hours. It was just the way things were back then—30 years ago, working endless shifts was seen as the norm. I remember looking at my senior colleagues and wondering, How do they manage? Why can’t I do it the way they do? I pushed myself harder and harder, convinced that I just needed to try more, give more, and sacrifice more.

But over time, the cracks began to show. I felt constantly drained, emotionally and physically. It wasn’t just the long hours—it was the sheer weight of trying to be everything for everyone without pausing to consider what I needed. And that’s the problem many of us face: we’re so focused on giving to others that we forget to give to ourselves.

The consequences of this mindset became clear. I wasn’t just tired; I was heading toward burnout. I started to notice how my lack of self-care wasn’t just affecting me—it was affecting my family, my work, and everyone around me. I realized that if I wanted to be the best version of myself for others, I needed to start taking care of myself first.

A Turning Point: Prioritising Self-Care

The moment of clarity came when I decided to reduce my working hours. It wasn’t an easy decision, especially back then when the culture around work and health was very different. Cutting back on my hours felt like admitting defeat at first. But as difficult as it was, it turned out to be the best decision I could have made—for myself and for my family.

By working fewer hours, I created space in my life for the things that mattered most. I still had all the responsibilities of being a wife and a mother—cooking, cleaning, and everything else—but I also found time to do things that replenished me. I went for walks, rode my bike, and simply allowed myself moments to breathe and recharge. These small acts of self-care made a world of difference.

Now, 27 years later, I look back with immense gratitude for that decision. It allowed me to sustain my career, avoid burnout, and continue doing work that I love with passion and energy. It’s a reminder that prioritising your own needs isn’t selfish—it’s essential.

The Ripple Effect of Prioritising Self-Care

One thing I’ve learned is that when you take care of yourself, it has a ripple effect. If you’re a mother, you’re often the central cog in your family’s wheel. Your energy and well-being set the tone for everyone around you. When you’re running on empty, it’s not just you who suffers—it’s your family and even your broader community.

Taking care of yourself allows you to show up as your best self, not just for you but for those who rely on you. And this principle applies to everyone, not just mothers. Whether you’re a caregiver, a professional, or simply someone with a lot on your plate, prioritizing your well-being benefits everyone in your life.

Common Challenges in Self-Prioritisation

Despite knowing the importance of self-care, many of us struggle to put it into practice. Why is that? Here are some common reasons:

  1. Guilt
Many people, especially women, feel guilty about prioritising self-care. We’re conditioned to believe that our worth is tied to how much we do for others, and taking time for ourselves can feel selfish. But the truth is, you can’t pour from an empty cup.

  2. Time Constraints
With busy schedules, finding time for self-care can feel impossible. Between work, family, and other responsibilities, carving out even a few minutes for yourself can seem like a luxury.

  3. Fear of Judgment
Admitting that you need help or that you can’t do it all can feel like a failure. But asking for support and setting boundaries are signs of strength, not weakness.

Steps to Start Prioritising Self-Care

So, how can you begin to prioritise yourself? Here are some practical steps:

  1. Reflect on Your Needs
Take a moment to ask yourself: What do I need right now? Is it more sleep, better nutrition, time for exercise, or simply a break from constant demands? Identifying your needs is the first step toward meeting them.

  2. Set Boundaries
Learn to say no when necessary. It’s okay to put limits on your time and energy, even with loved ones. Setting boundaries helps you protect the time and space you need to recharge.

  3. Make Small Changes
Self-care doesn’t have to be a complete overhaul of your life. Start small—go for a short walk, take a few minutes to meditate, or swap screen time for an earlier bedtime. Small, consistent actions add up over time.

  4. Address Specific Goals
For instance, if weight loss is a priority, consider what changes you can make to achieve sustainable results. This could mean preparing healthier meals, incorporating regular physical activity, or seeking support from a program or community.

  5. Embrace Imperfection
Remember, it’s not about being perfect—it’s about showing up for yourself in whatever way you can. Life is messy and unpredictable, but small, imperfect steps are still steps forward.

The Danger of Perfectionism

In today’s world, the pressure to be perfect is everywhere. Social media, in particular, has created a culture where people feel they need to look flawless, perform perfectly, and meet impossible standards. This pressure affects everyone, from school-aged children to adults, and it can be incredibly damaging.

But life isn’t perfect, and it’s not meant to be. Expecting perfection only sets us up for disappointment. Instead, focus on progress, not perfection. Every step you take toward prioritizing yourself is a victory, no matter how small.

My Challenge to You

As we begin this new year, I challenge you to think about how you can start prioritising yourself. What small changes can you make today to take better care of your mind and body? Maybe it’s getting to bed a little earlier, taking a short walk, or setting aside time to do something you love. Whatever it is, take that first step.

Remember, when you take care of yourself, you’re not just benefiting yourself—you’re also creating a positive impact on everyone around you. So let’s make this the year we commit to prioritising our own well-being.
