In 2016, I attended my first meditation retreat. Before that, I struggled to meditate for even 30 minutes. Yet, I felt a strange pull to sign up for a 9-day silent retreat in Western Australia. Despite my fears, it turned out to be one of the best experiences of my life. Since then, I’ve gone on a retreat every year. During the pandemic, I rented a small cabin on the Sunshine Coast to do self-retreats because I didn’t want to miss out on the benefits.
Here are the benefits I personally experience during these retreats:
1. Complete Re-set
I am the typical ‘rushing woman’. I’m always rushing from one task to another, multitasking, planning and doing. ALWAYS doing! These 9 days allow me to completely reset. I turn off my phone and lock it away, using an old analogue wristwatch to tell time. I use these precious days to reflect on my life, priorities, and values.
2. Sleep, Sleep, Sleep
During the first few days, I can’t seem to get enough sleep! I nap in the mornings, doze off after lunch, and still enjoy a full night’s rest. After a few days, I feel so rejuvenated that my need for sleep naturally decreases.
3. The Power of Silence
Nine days of silence! I’m a talker, so my friends couldn’t believe I signed up for a silent retreat. But it was blissful. Interactions with others can keep our minds busy for hours or days. It usually takes me three days to quiet my mind and reduce the whirlwind of thoughts. When my mind is quiet, I feel energized and happy. I always leave the retreat feeling high on life.
4. Immersed in Nature's Comfort
The retreat center sits nestled in a stunning forested valley south of Perth, surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty. Walking among the trees, observing kangaroos hopping by, basking in golden sunsets, and tuning in to the symphony of birdsong—these are the moments I cherish most. Nature’s embrace soothes the mind, offering a serene backdrop for reflection, contemplation, and the much-needed exercise that invigorates both body and soul.
5. Nourishment and Fasting
This retreat is for Buddhist practitioners, where meal times are structured with breakfast at 6:45 am and lunch at 11 am, followed by fasting until the next day. Local Buddhist communities generously provide a buffet of delicious Thai, Vietnamese, or Sri Lankan dishes. While maintaining a low-carb diet here might be challenging, fasting for 18 hours daily has been a saving grace. Additionally, incorporating a couple of 24-hour fasts helps to balance my eating habits. Not having to think about preparing meals is such a relief, allowing me to fully immerse myself in the retreat experience.
6. Anonymity and Community
The center hosts 60 people of all ages, genders, and ethnicities, fostering a diverse and inclusive environment. Due to the silence observed during the retreat, we don’t engage in traditional introductions or exchanges, allowing us to remain anonymous to each other. This anonymity is refreshing; it means we’re not judged by our backgrounds or occupations. Instead, we’re united by our shared commitment to spiritual growth.
Despite the silence, there’s a palpable sense of community within the retreat. We’re all expected to contribute and help with chores, tidying communal spaces. shared responsibility fosters a deep sense of camaraderie and connection, despite our limited verbal interactions. It’s a reminder that even in silence, the bonds of community can thrive.
7. Spiritual Growth
This is crucial for me. Over the years, I’ve become more resilient and courageous in handling life’s ups and downs.
8. Embracing Simplicity
The place we stay in is simple yet cozy. I pack light, bringing just three sets of clothes and the essentials. It’s liberating not to stress about outfits or appearances. Not needing to do my hair or wear makeup is so freeing. We all move around in comfy, casual clothes, feeling relaxed and carefree.
9. Gratitude and Joy
I always leave the retreat with an immense sense of gratitude and joy. I’m thankful for the monks who teach, the community that provides the food, and the amazing facilities in Australia (even if they are across the country from Brisbane!). I’m also grateful for the freedom and ability to attend. These feelings sustain me long after I return home.
10. An Energised Mind
My meditation practice has improved over the years. I feel calmer, more relaxed, and energized. My mind is ready to tackle the challenges of the year ahead. This annual retreat is a top priority for me.
In our modern world, we invest heavily in our physical bodies but often neglect our minds. Many people don’t realize that the mind, distinct from the brain, drives everything we think and do. It’s essential to care for our minds just as much as, if not more than, our bodies.
I encourage you to take a break from your busy lives, even if only for a few days, to experience the profound benefits of a retreat. It’s a decision you won’t regret.
